One Book, One City for Kids – Kids Are Talking!
One Book, One City for Kids is an annual reading program offered through a partnership between the Grand Rapids Public Library and Grand Rapids Public Schools. Each year the selected book is purchased by the Library Foundation, discussed and integrated into the school curriculum by all fifth graders in the district. This shared reading experience promotes community, helps develop a lifelong love of reading among school-age readers, and inspires readers to bring story ideas and themes to life through course discussion and creative works. In addition, it promotes community development through collaboration between public libraries, school libraries and community groups.
The selection for 2017 is Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. It is the story of Melody, a girl born with cerebral palsy, who has a photographic memory but is unable to walk or talk. Melody finds her voice through the use of a computer keyboard, but life remains complicated as she interacts with her classmates and the adults in her life in a new way.
Sponsorships for this program and the April 19, 2017 event are still available!
